The beautiful Elounda is located in eastern Crete north of Agios Nikolaos and south of the coastal settlement of Plaka in Mirabello Bay.
ELOUNDA IN TIME
Before the area became today’s “secret resort of celebrities” was a picturesque fishing village that won you over at first sight.
Its inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture, fishing and salt production. The Elounda salt flats were an important source of income during the Venetian occupation, supplying almost all of Europe with salt.
WHAT CAN I SEE
How easy it would be to tell you “what not to see” as Elounda is a painting from beginning to end. Wherever you turn your gaze you will see something new that you will want to come back inside to keep all the beauty of the place.
One kilometer away you will find the ruins of the ancient city of Olos. It was considered one of the most important cities of Crete, its ruins that are still visible in the Poros canal. You will have the opportunity to admire the Basilica of Poros with its imposing mosaic and the Basilica of the Pumpkin with its beautiful white marbles.
Of course a visit to the Windmills is more than necessary. In the place “Kanali” of Elounda are saved three windmills that you must see. The construction of the masonry has been done with local semi-carved stones, while the entrance door to the mill is wooden. The original roof has been replaced with a sheet metal construction which can be turned depending on the wind direction.
